Chapter 5: One Sword, One Kill

Murong Yi looked at Jiang Chen.

“You just completed your class change?”

“Yeah.”

“Why aren’t you training with the school’s instructors? I remember all graduates are assigned support teachers to help them level up and get through the beginner phase.”

“I wanted to train by myself.”

Murong Yi nodded.

Just as she had expected.

Young people were always like this. They thought they were amazing after successfully changing classes and wanted to see monsters on their own.

But many ended up retreating in fear.

Some were even scared enough to wet their pants.

That was still the mild outcome.

Every year, there were rookies who lost their lives because they were arrogant and refused to listen to anyone.

Murong Yi smiled.

“How about this? Come with us. I’ll let you see what monsters are really like. That way you won’t die at their hands. If you get scared, you can head back.”

Jiang Chen shook his head.

“Thanks, but I can protect myself.”

After saying that, Jiang Chen walked away.

“This kid really doesn’t know his place. He actually thinks he’s amazing.”

“A D-Class Swordsman? Such a trash profession, and he dares to come out alone?”

“He’ll probably die out here.”

“Captain, don’t bother with him.”

Murong Yi sighed.

“Such a handsome face. What a pity.”

Jiang Chen walked out of the teleportation altar.

Tattens Hills.

This was a small town built from blue stone.

Many adventurers had gathered there, mostly forming groups of two or three.

“Looking for a level 10 Priest for the Tattens Hills dungeon!”

“Need a tank class! Warrior or Knight is fine. Swordsmen can get lost…”

“Looking for a Mage! Preferably an Ice Mage, level 20 or above…”

Jiang Chen glanced around.

These were all independent adventurers.

Whenever they entered dangerous areas, they formed temporary teams for safety.

Since they lacked trust, equipment drops often led to infighting and betrayal.

Jiang Chen headed east.

The monsters around Tattens Hills ranged from levels 1 to 10, making them perfect for leveling.

Taking a deep breath, he left the town.

Soon, he spotted a group of five people.

At first glance, they were clearly freshmen like him.

Unlike Jiang Chen, they hadn’t skipped the school’s training program.

A Priest stood beside them providing support.

“Knight, activate your shield and move up front!”

“Priest, stay in the back and keep casting buffs, defense skills, and healing spells!”

“Mage, use Fireball from the rear!”

“Move faster! Stop dragging your feet! Coordinate with each other!”

Jiang Chen looked at the monster they were fighting.

[Corrupted Scarecrow]

[Level: 1]

[HP: 91/100]

[Physical Attack: 10-25]

[Physical Defense: 2-12]

[Magic Defense: 0-6]

[Description: Don’t be fooled by its appearance. This scarecrow hits surprisingly hard. Its only weakness is fire.]

The Corrupted Scarecrow resembled a human-shaped monster.

Its body emitted black energy, and its empty eyes made it look terrifying.

Jiang Chen was surprised.

Even a level 1 Corrupted Scarecrow had a maximum attack power of 25.

Just two or three hits would be enough to kill him.

A Fireball struck the scarecrow.

-23

The Mage cheered.

“I hit it!”

“Keep attacking! Don’t stop!”

“Knight, hold the line! Don’t let it reach the Mage!”

“You’re the tank! Protect your teammates!”

The Priest continued giving orders.

A nearby adventurer glanced at Jiang Chen.

Another new student, apparently.

But unlike the others, he didn’t have experienced professionals protecting him.

Probably a rookie with no background trying to train alone.

Jiang Chen turned and left.

He understood.

Most freshmen either had family connections or enough money to hire protection during their beginner period.

At beginner training zones, arguments constantly broke out over monster kills.

People were always stealing each other’s targets.

Jiang Chen smiled and walked away.

He had no intention of competing with rookies for monsters.

Choosing a remote path, he headed deeper into the wilderness.

Gradually, there were fewer and fewer adventurers.

Eventually, he finally found a monster by itself.

[Corrupted Scarecrow]

[Level: 1]

[HP: 100/100]

[Physical Attack: 10-25]

[Physical Defense: 2-12]

[Magic Defense: 0-6]

Then let’s test my skills on you.

Jiang Chen took a deep breath and approached.

100 meters…

70 meters…

30 meters…

He stopped.

According to information online, the Corrupted Scarecrow’s detection range was ten meters.

Once someone entered that range, it would immediately attack.

Jiang Chen gripped his short sword.

Then casually slashed.

Shing—

A sword beam shot out from the blade.

A flash of white light appeared.

The scarecrow split into two pieces as black energy poured out of its body.

[Experience +10]

Jiang Chen was stunned.

Instant kill…

Killed with a single strike…

This was the effect of Hundredfold Amplification.

Not only had the attack range increased a hundredfold, but the attack power had as well.

The feeling was incredible.

Too powerful.

Who would have thought that a Corrupted Scarecrow requiring a five-person team to defeat could be instantly killed by a D-Class Swordsman from thirty meters away?

How was this a melee profession?

This was clearly a ranged profession.

Even Mages had casting range limitations.

Most spells were only effective within fifteen meters.

Beyond that, attacks would fail.

Hundredfold Amplification had transformed a melee class into a ranged class.

That strike had consumed one point of spirit power.

But it recovered almost instantly.

Jiang Chen checked his panel.

[Name: Jiang Chen]

[Class: Swordsman]

[Level: 0]

[Experience: 10/100]

[Constitution: 5]

[Strength: 5]

[Spirit: 6]

[Agility: 5]

[Equipment: Short Sword (White)]

[Storage Space: 5]

[Skills:]

Basic Swordsmanship:
Gather internal energy and release a sword beam.

Range: 40 meters

MP Cost: 1

Basic Footwork:

MP Cost: 1

Sword Aura Dominion:

Duration: 100 minutes

Attack Frequency: Every 0.1 seconds

MP Cost: 2

Passive Skill — Meditation:

Recovery Amount: 1 point

His experience had increased by 10.

Kill nine more scarecrows and he would level up.

If he were in a five-person party, he would only receive about 2 experience points per kill.

He would need to kill fifty scarecrows to level up.

Solo hunting was both faster and more rewarding.

Jiang Chen thought for a moment.

Then he continued hunting monsters while testing his new skills.

Let’s try Basic Footwork.

Whoosh—

His figure blurred.

Like a gust of wind, he rapidly sprinted forward.
